This year, being the 50th anniversary of the founding of our club, we celebrated the event by inviting trout fly fishermen, both expert and novices, to our 2016 Open Day.
Over 90 people turned up to enjoy the event despite the mixed weather – warm in the sunshine, but with a occasional chilly, northerly breeze which made the hot drinks, cakes and barbecued offerings particularly welcome !
Despite the wind, many anglers managed to catch a fish or two, then the trout duly regained their appetite just before dusk when the breeze had calmed. Colin Chandler provided an entertaining fly-tying demonstration, and it was evident that some of these flies were among the most successful of the day.
We were delighted to see our previous Chairman, Derek Hanson, and our founding member, ex-Chairman and Secretary, Donald Birrell at the Open Day, catching-up with old friends and fellow angling enthusiasts.
It was also pleasing to see our Open Day being such an enjoyable social, family event for all ages, with granddads explaining the elements of fishing to grandkids ; the sharing of rods and tackle, and the exchanging of tips, ideas, and tales of fishing exploits ; members with novices at the lakeside helping with casting ; and groups chatting and laughing whilst enjoying the complimentary hot drinks, sausages, burgers and our locally-caught and smoked trout !
Our warm thanks go to our warden, Emin, ; to all the volunteers, committee members, friends, donors, and attendees, who collectively made the day such a success.
